Here at GRUB we are very excited to be hosting some of Floating Art’s painting workshops!
Floating Art believe that with the will to learn and practice, everyone can be an artist.
They are dedicated to increasing the public’s entry into the art field, learning from different artists and movements from different ancient and contemporary cultures and integrating art with life. They run affordable art classes that allow everyone to learn in a relaxed and fun environment.
Whether you are already an artist or complete beginner, these classes will be a great choice for you.
Floating Art offer a wide range of different workshops, each exploring a variety of topics and techniques.

Studio Ghibli Painting Workshop
🗓Saturday 7th September
⏰2pm
Join us at GRUB MCR where we'll be holding our special Studio Ghibli Painting workshop!
To help you get started, we will teach you some basic drawing and watercolour techniques including colour mixing as well as line drawing and guide you through your painting session throughout. To help get you started, the session will start with a demonstration from our teacher after which you will complete your own painting. All experience levels are welcome, our teacher will adjust her advice according to your experience.
We will bring along a wide selection of Studio Ghibli references for you to choose from but for sure, if you have a particular favourite, you're welcome to bring along your own reference. In our workshops you choose what you want to paint.
This painting class is suitable for beginners as well as those with a little more artistic experience, so don't worry if it's your first time. Our vastly experienced teacher and local practicing artist Ula will be on hand to provide guidance and answer any questions you may have as you get busy creating your marvelous masterpiece.
At the end of your art class, you'll get the chance to stand back and admire your result or sharing your experiences with the group. You'll head home with your completed piece and a new skill that's perfect to practice whenever you're looking to clear your head.
Chinese Lantern Crafting Workshop

With the Mid-Autumn Festival in mind, we're excited for the return of our special Lantern Painting Workshop! You'll get to craft your own lantern as well as learn Chinese Painting techniques to decorate the lantern with. You will use materials such as Bamboo Brushes, Sumi Ink and Mineral Paints.
The workshop will begin with a demonstration from our teacher and local Artist Ula Fung. She will teach you some basic painting techniques and before you start on your Lantern you will warm up by painting onto Rice paper. We will bring along a selection of references themed on the Mid Autumn Festival. You will then have a chance to think about your design before building and painting onto your Lantern.
This workshop is suitable for beginners and up so if you haven't picked up a paint brush since school or you regularly paintin your own time, everybody is welcome to create together.
Japanese Ink Painting Workshop

Get expressional with some Japanese Sumi-E brush painting, let us teach you how to paint Bamboo, Panda's, Tigers and Rocks!
This class will begin with an introduction to Bamboo-brushes and our teacher will demonstrate different brushworks with Sumi ink. The workshop will be split into multiple sessions each beginning with a teacher demonstration, each time you will try a different topic which will involve different types of techniques and brush strokes. The first section will be simpler and the difficulty will increase slightly each time until the final peice for which you'll have the choice to paint onto a rice paper fan!
This workshop is suitable for everybody, whether you're an aspiring artist looking for a new challenge or you've always wanted to learn how to paint, you'll love this creative workshop experience.
Halloween Japanese Painting Workshop

Our Japanese Painting Workshop with a spooky twist. We're going Halloween style. Whether you want to paint the three vengeful spirits of Japan or something more contemporary such as Scream or Slimer from Ghost Busters, we've got you! We'll bring plenty of haunted references for you to choose from.
Learn from an experienced local artist, who'll teach you how to paint using traditional materials like bamboo brushes, sumi ink, Gansai Tambi 顔彩耽美 (Traditional Japanese colours), gold leaves on rice paper boards and Fans. The workshop will begin with a demonstration on how to draw and paint using these materials afterwhich you'll get stuck into the creative process.
We will bring along a selection of Halloween references of ghosts and haunts from all over the world and you'll be able to paint them using traditional and contemporary painting techniques.
This painting class is suitable for beginners as well as those with a little more artistic experience, so don't worry if it's your first time. Your teacher will be on hand to provide guidance and answer any questions.
